Attention Highland Avenue Residents and Merchants:
The Selectmen have recently been notified by the MA Highway Department that they will be scheduling a bridge repair project on the Highland Avenue Bridge in which the top deck of the bridge will be replaced, due to structural deficiencies. In order to expedite the construction schedule, they are considering full closure of the bridge for a period which could be 7 to 9 months; potentially begininng in November '09 and ending in August '10. They have proposed a detour loop that consists of Highland Avenue, Royalston Road, and Route 2A, a 5.5 mile detour.
Some concerns of the project that have been brought to the Board's attention are: how the bridge closure will effect all businesses on Highland Avenue, some of which rely heavily on seasonal tourism, the effect on response time of police and emergency vehicles needing to get to home on the Southern end of Highland Avenue, the extra mileage and time demand placed on town vehicles/employees during plowing seasons, and how this will effect the school bus routes; to name a few.
We will be organizing an informational meeting with a representative from the MA Highway Department once they are further along in their planning process, and will post the proposed meeting time and place. Those interested should check on the Channel 10 public access channel. Public meetings are also posted in the Town Hall and Library. In the meantime, we encourage any written correspondenc from the Town's residents, expressing their support or concern regarding this project. The notification received from MA Highway can be viewed at the Town Hall.
